Child Resistant Packaging – An Overview

Child-resistant packaging means packaging that is difficult to open or gain access to by a child younger than 52 months. However, it is not difficult to use correctly for an adult up to seventy years of age. Each pack may be divided into non-reclosable or reclosable sections. Each may also use one of many methods to ensure child resistance.

According to the international standard, BS EN ISO 8317.2004, child proof packaging is one that, once opened, can be reclosed with a similar level of security and can be used a sufficient amount of times to disperse the entire contents without losing security.

Reclosable packs can be used in a variety of ways to protect children's resistance. All of them are based on children under 52 months old not being able to perform two simultaneous actions. Push and turn, which is a two-piece mold that presents the child with an illusion of affordance, is the most common child-resistant mechanism.

For household products, squeeze and turn packs are very popular. They are usually made of one-piece moldings. Line up the Arrows packaging is where the two fixed points of the closure and container must be aligned to allow the pack's opening. The complete pack is included in all reclosable child-resistant packs. There are child-resistant packing materials, but not child-resistant closures and containers.
